With a bootable Ubuntu USB stick, you can:

To see all your bootable drives, hold down the Alt/Option key while your Mac is booting. Start holding it before you see the apple logo, and keep holding until you see the list of bootable drives. From that menu you can select the USB drive to boot from.

Apple hardware considerations
- Rufus is a utility that helps format and create bootable USB flash drives, such as USB keys/pendrives, memory sticks, etc. It can be especially useful for cases where: you need to create USB installation media from bootable ISOs (Windows, Linux, UEFI, etc.) you need to work on a system that doesn't have an OS installed.
